PEDIATRIC EYE EXAMS

A simple vision screening test the primary care doctor’s office or school vision screening is no substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. Have your child’s eyes examined as recommended to check if he or she has normal vision in both eyes, the eyes are functioning together as a team, the focusing ability is normal and that the anterior and posterior parts of the eyes are healthy.

Your child should have a comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age, 3 years of age and prior to entering kindergarten as recommended by the American Optometric Association.

Eye health is key to academic success, about 80% of learning is done visually in the classroom. Uncorrected astigmatism negatively impacts a child’s reading fluency and slows down reading speed. An average of 1 in 3 kids in the US have myopia and many cases go undetected without a proper eye exam.

Many eye conditions, such as refractive amblyopia, go undetected until it is too late to correct. Once the brain’s critical neuroplasticity closes after a certain age, reduced visual acuity in a lazy eye can no longer be reversed, resulting in permanent reduced visual acuity and cannot be corrected.

AMBLYOPIA

Amblyopia or "lazy eye" that is detected early in life can be promptly treated to avoid permanent reduced visual acuity.

TEEN EYE CARE

Teenage eye care is often overlooked but teenagers face unique visual demands from increased reading workloads to increased digital device screen time and rapid physiological growth of the eyes.

It is important to keep up with an everchanging technology-heavy world with the increased use of digital devices. Eyestrain and eye fatigue are common symptoms of increased screen time and prescribing anti-fatigue lenses, with bluelight protection will often help alleviate those symptoms for your teen.

It is also important to check for uncorrected astigmatism that often goes unnoticed that can hinder reading fluency and academic performance.

Our Optometrists can also evaluate whether your teen is ready to safely transition to contact lenses, a common time for many teens to start the conversation of contact lenses.

Late adolescence is also when progressive conditions like keratoconus typically begin to emerge, making early screening essential to detect corneal changes and protect long-term vision before permanent damage occurs. We can assess for early signs of keratoconus and can measure your teen’s corneal shape with corneal topography testing.

UNITY RELIEVE LENS

UNITY Relieve is sharply focused on the use of digital devices such as computers, cellphones, laptops, etc. These are considered "anti-fatigue" lenses that help reduce eyestrain and eye fatigue while on digital devices for prolonged periods of time.

Unity Relieve Lenses provide everyday distance vision, a slight power boost in the near, and targeted blue light defense to reduce symptoms of digital eye strain and fatigue. They come with blue light anti-reflective coating that reduces potentially harmful blue light exposure to the eyes.

KERATOCONUS

Keratoconus is an eye disease in which the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. It can occur in one or both eyes and often begins during a person's teens or early 20s.

MYOPIA CONTROL

We are wholly involved in the revolutionary efforts worldwide in managing myopia (nearsightedness) with patient-centered treatment options to slow the progression of myopia based on the latest advances in research. We offer the latest advancements in myopia management today and will design a treatment best suited for your child.
Myopia control is important because slowing the progression of myopia in your child reduces the risk of vision-threatening complications associated with high myopia later in life — including glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment and even blindness. For every diopter a child’s myopia can be reduced, their chance of retinal disease decreases by 40%.
There are various treatment options to delay the onset and manage the progression of myopia, giving better visual outcomes for the children with myopia and who are at risk for myopia progression.
Our optometrists are highly trained and qualified to provide the appropriate treatment options to slow the progression of myopia in your child. We are certified to fit FDA approved methods for use in myopia control such as the newly released, Essilor Stellest lenses, soft therapeutic lenses with MiSight daily contact lenses, as well as and atropine eye drops.
Schedule an exam today and we can strategize the best myopia control options recommended for your child.

WHAT IS MYOPIA CONTROL?

Myopia control is the use of specific treatments to slow the progression of  nearsightedness in children. We utilize the most common research-based and FDA approved methods such as soft therapeutic contact lenses, Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) and atropine eye drops.

MYOPIA CONTROL TREATMENT OPTIONS

0.05% ATROPINE EYE DROPS

This involves the daily use of atropine eye drops that help slow the development of nearsightedness. Your child will still need to wear glasses during the day.

SOFT THERAPEUTIC LENSES

These specialty soft contact lenses are worn during the day to control myopia progression while providing clear vision. Children do not need to wear their glasses during the day and will wear soft contact lenses to see clearly.

HALT GLASSES

Newest development in myopia control, specially designed glasses proven to slow the progression of myopia. Essilor Stellest lenses use the FDA-approved, revolutionary HALT Technology to slow the rate of nearsightedness. These are glasses that are worn full-time and work like a single vision lens.

ORTHOKERATOLOGY (ORTHO-K)

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a specialty, rigid contact lens worn overnight that temporarily reshapes the cornea, allowing clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lens wear.

ESSILOR STELLEST GLASSES FOR MYOPIA CONTROL

Essilor Stellest glasses are the first eyeglass lenses that are FDA approved for slowing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children 6 to 12 years old at the initiation of treatment. Prior to this, there was only one approved device for slowing the progression of myopia in the form of soft contact lenses or orthokeratology.

We are excited to be one of the first to prescribe these FDA approved glasses for myopia control treatment. This will help to fill the gap for children who are unable to wear contacts and cannot tolerate side effects of alternative methods of myopia control such as atropine (i.e. sensitivity to light, blurred vision).

The Essilor® Stellest® lenses have been designed with an exclusive and pioneering technology called H.A.L.T. (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target Technology). The H.A.L.T. technology is made of a constellation of 1,021 invisible lenslets. This constellation creates a volume of myopic defocus, sending a signal to slow eye elongation and myopia progression.

All children diagnosed with myopia can now receive myopia control treatment through a simple pair of glasses.
